Ballinrobe Market House

About This Project

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project commenced in August 2018 and was completed at the end of January 2019. The works consisted of removing and disposing of existing asbestos slate coverings, installing new structural timber sections where required and consolidation of stonework at eaves and wall plate level.

Blue Bangor slates were reinstated on the roof finishes. Where plaster had boast on chimneys it was removed and replaced with hydraulic lime renders. Chimney pots were removed and set aside for re-use while chimney copings were reformed and haunched using hydraulic lime mortars formed by existing cut stone chimney corbels.

Lead trays were installed into chimneys to provide the weathering detail. Intricate lead detailing was completed to the clock tower roof, rolled ridge capping, chimney aprons and back guttering. The existing weather vane was restored and reinstated. Gutterings were removed and replaced with a Hargreaves foundry cast iron guttering system. New hopper heads were introduced at flat valley locations. Existing timber sash windows were removed and refurbished off-site before being re-installed.

The project was located on a busy corner of the main street in Ballinrobe which presented accessibility complications. Materials were periodically lifted into position by creating a night time road closure with the assistance of Mayo County Council and lifting materials into position from a mobile crane.
